Workplace first aid

Kenya governs workplace first aid through the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007 and the First Aid in the Workplace Regulations, 2024 (Legal Notice No. 79), enforced by DOSHS, with the number of appointed first-aiders scaled to headcount (1 for fewer than 10 workers, up to 5 plus 2 for each further 100 above 100). Each appointed first-aider must hold a certificate of competence from a DOSHS-approved institution, valid for one year and renewed annually.

Childcare CPR & first aid

Childcare in Kenya is a devolved county function under the Constitution and the Children Act 2022, and the Nairobi City County Child Care Facilities Act 2017 (with regulations finalised Oct 2025) requires a certificate confirming that all employees have completed first-aid and safety training for facility registration. Other counties such as Kajiado enforce similar licensing.

Good Samaritan law

Kenya has no dedicated Good Samaritan Act and no general duty to rescue; as a common-law jurisdiction the Penal Code (Cap. 63) imposes only narrow life-preservation duties tied to charge or custody relationships. The Traffic Act (Cap. 403) s. 73 requires a driver in an accident to stop and report, while the Health Act, 2017 (s. 7) obliges medical institutions — not bystanders — to provide emergency treatment.

Residential care settings

In Kenya, caregivers and health-care assistants in home-based, private and residential care are expected to be trained in first aid and CPR, which are components of the national TVET-CDACC caregiver qualification recognized under the KNQA framework. Stand-alone recognized certificates are accepted by private caregiving and home-care employers, in addition to the caregiver's occupational training, and are renewed periodically.

Foster families

Foster care in Kenya is governed by the Children Act, 2022 and the Children (Foster Care Placement) Regulations, which focus on eligibility, home suitability and the child's welfare, with approval resting on the National Council for Children's Services and a designated children's officer. First aid is not named as a stand-alone rule, but a current recognized first-aid and CPR certificate is commonly expected of approved carers.

Online course recognition

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Kenya; first-aiders must be trained by a DOSHS-approved provider, and because the regulations do not prescribe the delivery mode, online theory with a practical assessment is accepted. Courses are built on the ILCOR 2025 Consensus on Science.
